Michael Moore won't apologize to newspaper

BLOOMINGTON, Ill., Aug. 13 (UPI) -- "Fahrenheit 9/11" director Michael Moore refused to apologize for allegedly altering a headline from an Illinois newspaper in his documentary.

Officials at the Bloomington Pantagraph said Moore took the headline from a letter to the editor about the 2000 election and made it look like a news story, even changing the date, World Entertainment News Network reported Friday.

The offending headline read: "Latest Florida recount shows Gore won election."

The Pantagraph's publisher sent a letter to Moore seeking an apology and $1 in compensatory damages. Although the letter's tone was lighthearted, the response was firm.

Devereux Chatillon, an attorney for Moore's Westside Productions, replied this week, saying Moore violated no copyright laws and did nothing misleading and while the date was wrong, the mistake "did not make a difference to the editorial point ... and was in no way detrimental to (The Pantagraph)."

"Baloney," said Publisher Henry Bird.

The sage continued when a Hollywood producer called the Pantagraph asking if the paper would like take on Moore by participating in a new NBC legal reality series, the Pantagraph reported.
