Donald Duck gets Hollywood star at 70

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Walt Disney's eccentric superstar, Donald Duck, received the 2,257th star on Hollywood's famous Walk of Fame Monday, nearly 70 years after his "birth."

Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Goofy, and Daisy Duck attended the ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard to congratulate Donald and wish the feathered cartoon character in the sailor suit a belated happy birthday -- Donald appeared for the first time on June 9, 1934, in a Silly Symphonies cartoon, "The Wise Little Hen."

He began a solo career in 1937 and appeared in more than 50 cartoons before 1941.

During the middle of World War II, Donald starred in the anti-Nazi film "Der Fuehrer's Face," in which the short-tempered duck had a nightmare about waking up in a totalitarian society run by Nazis.

"Der Fuehrer's Face," won the 1943 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.

Johnny Grant, chairman of the Walk of Fame, said Donald Duck rose from being a humble barnyard animal to become a beloved American cultural icon.
