'Hitchhiker's Guide' author's kin in film

LONDON, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- The family of the late Douglas Adams, the British author of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," have been cast in a film based on the sci-fi story.

Adams' mother, sisters, brother and daughter work as extras in a scene when Earth learns of its impending doom, producer Robbie Stamp told the BBC.

Adams' half-brother, James Thrift, said being on set "makes you realize how (Adams) not only created something so intrinsically valuable to the world at large, but also how ... he inspired those around him so much. That inspiration now seems to be firmly with the film production crew," he wrote at the author's Web site.

The film, scheduled for a June 2005 release, is based on Adams' original 1977 radio scripts, which were published as a book, and the subsequent British TV series which aired during the early 1980s.

"The Office" star Martin Freeman, rapper Mos Def, actors John Malkovich and Bill Nighy also appear in the film.

Adams died of a heart attack in 2001.
