Dead boy's parents blame video game makers

LEICESTER, England, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- The British parents of a teen killed by a man allegedly obsessed with a PlayStation 2 video game are set to sue Sony and the game designer for $87.5 million.

The parents of Stefan Pakeerah, 14, have hired a U.S. attorney to file a civil suit against the gaming industry, including Sony, the media empire that manufactures PlayStation gaming consoles, Times of London reported Monday.

Pakeerah was beaten and stabbed to death after being lured to a park by Warren Leblanc, 17, who was said to be infatuated with Manhunt, a game in which a man roams a city killing people.

Leblanc will be sentenced next month.

"Children are being trained to kill each other through these games. The tragedy of Stefan is not an isolated incident. The Pakeerahs are a brave family because they are willing to do something about it," said Jack Thompson, the family's attorney from Miami.

Manhunt's designer, Rockstar Games of Edinburgh, Scotland, will also be named in the suit, Thompson said.

The legal action is based on a $60 million U.S. lawsuit served by the families of two victims shot to death by Tennessee teens who told police they were acting out scenes from the violent video game Grand Theft Auto.
