Weezer finishes record, singer to Harvard

LOS ANGELES, July 29 (UPI) -- With a fifth album nearly finished, Weezer's singer has decided to return to Harvard to finish the degree he put on hold to pursue music.

Rivers Cuomo first entered Harvard in the fall of 1995, a year after Weezer released its self-titled hit debut, and left in 1997, Rollingstone.com said.

During his freshman year, Cuomo wrote songs for the band's second album, "Pinkerton," which was a commercial flop.

The failure prompted Cuomo, an English literature major, to postpone his course work to concentrate on music.

Two years later, Cuomo decided to go back to Harvard, but missed the registration deadline by two weeks, sending him back to his music career.

Weezer's next self-titled project, which fans dubbed "The Green Album," debuted on the charts at No. 4 in 2001. "Maladroit" followed.

Cuomo began work earlier this year with producer Rick Rubin on the fifth album, expected to be released later this year or early 2005.
