Edinburgh film festival prepares to open

EDINBURGH, Scotland, July 15 (UPI) -- A black-and-white film with Bill Murray, a Korean remake of "Dangerous Liaisons" and a Finnish "Pop Idol" satire are set for Scotland's top film festival.

The Edinburgh International Film Festival will run Aug. 18-29 for its 58th year featuring cinema from the United States, Brazil, Korea, Finland and, of course, Scotland, the Scotsman reported Thursday.

"There are many film festivals. I'm convinced that every parking lot will have a film festival by 2007. But Edinburgh has a pre-eminence in Europe because of its spirit of discovery. We believe in giving people things they don't already know. We want to surprise and astonish our audience,"

said Shane Danielsen, the festival's artistic director.

"The Motorcycle Diaries," by top Brazilian director Walter Salles, based on the journals of Che Guevara, will open the festival.

"2046," by Wong Kar-Wai, a film Danielson described as "one of the most ravishingly beautiful and swooningly romantic things you will see this year," will close the event.
