'Jimmy Scott' wins Independent Lens award

LOS ANGELES, June 25 (UPI) -- Viewers of the U.S. PBS series "Independent Lens" have named "Jimmy Scott: If You Only Knew" their favorite film of the 2003-04 season.

"Jimmy Scott: If You Only Knew," by Matthew Buzzell and Brian Gerber, is a film portrait of the jazz singer who disappeared from public view -- then cleared an array of obstacles to gain fame again. Scott overcame Kallman's Syndrome, prejudice and self-destructive behavior to re-restablish his reputation in jazz.

"Independent Lens" presents new documentary and drama films made by what producers refer to as "independent thinkers -- filmmakers who are taking creative risks, calling their own shots and finding untold stories in unexpected places."

The series is hosted by actor Don Cheadle, the star of such movies as "Ocean's Eleven," "Traffic" and "The Rat Pack."
