Sorkin to adapt 'Charlie Wilson's War'

LOS ANGELES, June 18 (UPI) -- Aaron Sorkin will write a film adaptation of George Crile's book, "Charlie Wilson's War," The Hollywood Reporter said Friday.

Sorkin is the Emmy-winning creator of "The West Wing."

Crile's book is an account of a covert CIA operation to arm the mujahadeen -- so-called holy warriors against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s. Charlie Wilson was the Texas congressman who collaborated with a CIA operative to engineer help for the Afghan rebels from the U.S. Congress, the CIA and several foreign governments.

Sorkin also wrote the features "A Few Good Men" and "The American President" -- both directed by Rob Reiner.

Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are producing "Charlie Wilson's War" through their Playtone production company. Universal Pictures will distribute the movie.
