AIDS group to honor Tony Kushner

NEW YORK, June 2 (UPI) -- The American Foundation for AIDS research said in New York Tuesday it will honor playwright Tony Kushner at its annual Honoring with Pride awards June 8.

Kushner is the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning writer of "Angels in America."

The fifth annual Honoring with Pride awards will also honor Zackie Achmat, the South African AIDS activist who founded the Treatment Action Campaign, and Jonathan Canno, a founding board member of amfAR.

Meryl Streep, who starred in the recent HBO adaptation of "Angels in America," will present Kushner's award.

The American Foundation for AIDS Research is a nonprofit organization that supports AIDS research, prevention and education, and lobbies on AIDS-related public policy matters. Since 1985, amfAR has invested nearly $220 million in support for its programs and awarded grants to more than 2,000 research teams worldwide.
