LOS ANGELES, June 1 (UPI) -- The DVD release of "The Reagans" contains controversial scenes cut from the TV presentation of the miniseries, Daily Variety reported Tuesday.
"The Reagans" -- starring James Brolin and Judy Davis as former president Ronald Reagan and first lady Nancy Reagan -- was dropped from CBS' prime time schedule last year after Reagan supporters complained it presented an unfair and unflattering portrait of the 40th president.
The miniseries eventually aired on Showtime, the cable channel owned and operated by CBS' parent, Viacom.
Variety said the DVD release includes one of the most contentious scenes in the battle over "The Reagans" -- the one in which the teleplay has Reagan referring to AIDS patients by saying, "Those that live in sin shall die in sin."
Reagan supporters insist the former president never said that. Variety says the DVD includes an alternate take in which Reagan uses different words.
