'Prisoner of Azkaban' opens in Britain

LONDON, May 31 (UPI) -- Thousands of fans lined London streets for the premiere of Harry Potter's "The Prisoner of Azkaban," attended by the film's stars and author J.K. Rowling.

Approximately 5,000 turned up in Leicester Square to greet Daniel Radcliffe, the 14-year-old star of the film, and the other actors, despite heavy rains Sunday night, Britain's Telegraph reported Monday.

Rowling, who did not attend the May 22 New York premiere, attended London's showing with her husband, Neil Murray.

Jonathan Stuart, 13, said he had been waiting in Leicester Square since 6 a.m.

"Harry's part of my childhood because we are the same age and I am growing up with him," Stuart said. "He had trouble settling down at school and most kids can identify with that."

Bob Geldof's daughter Peaches, the artist Sam Taylor Wood and Gloria Hunniford attended the premiere.
