Geffen Playhouse to fete American theater

LOS ANGELES, May 24 (UPI) -- Geffen Playhouse producing director Gilbert Cates said in Los Angeles Monday that the theater will launch a 10-year-long series to celebrate American theater.

Cates, who has produced a record 11 Academy Awards telecasts, said the Geffen seasons will examine the values and ideals of America throughout history.

The 2004-05 season will begin with the West Coast Premiere of the Tony-winning play "Take Me Out," the story of a professional baseball player in New York who comes out of the closet. The schedule also includes Lerner & Loewe's "Paint Your Wagon" and two Pulitzer Prize winning plays -- "You Can't Take It with You" and "I Am My Own Wife."

During the first season of the campaign, the Geffen will operate out of the Brentwood Theatre at the Veterans Administration complex in Los Angeles. The Brentwood will house the Geffen company for 15 months, while the Geffen Playhouse undergoes renovation and expansion.
