LOS ANGELES, May 21 (UPI) -- Pop star Jessica Simpson has nabbed the coveted role of Daisy Duke in Hollywood's film remake of the 1970s classic TV series "The Dukes of Hazzard."
Simpson, who stars with husband Nick Lachey in MTV's "Newlyweds," won the part over several Hollywood celebrities, including Jessica Biel, Mandy Moore and Britney Spears, reportedly the front runner, E! Online said Friday.

"She is really excited," Joe Simpson, Simpson's father and manager, said about his daughter. "Daisy Duke is right down her alley."
Filming is scheduled to begin this summer.
Simpson sets off June 4 for a North American tour and she and Lachey start their MTV series' third season in June.
