Richard Pryor in Showtime comedy

LOS ANGELES, May 20 (UPI) -- Showtime's president has approved a comedy series starring Richard Pryor for the cable network, Thursday's Hollywood Reporter said.

The veteran comedian's show is part of a programming development push by Robert Greenblatt, Showtime's new entertainment president, the Reporter said, with two other comedies and three new dramas also slated for the premium cable network.

Greenblatt said in January his goal for Showtime, known for niche-oriented series such as "Queer as Folk," "Soul Food" and "The L Word," was to move away from demographic-specific shows, as evidenced by the new programs.

Pryor's show will join a group of new programming that ranges from comic takes on life in New York and suburbia to dramas about an undercover agent in an Islamic militant cell and about the relationship between a gangster and his politician brother, the Reporter said.
