Quentin Tarantino stars at Cannes opening

CANNES, France, May 13 (UPI) -- Director Quentin Tarantino reigned at the Cannes Film Festival's opening night with a montage of his films shown before the event's first movie.

Tarantino, head of the Cannes Film Festival jury, delighted the crowd Wednesday night, when he addressed the festival prior to the showing of Pedro Almodovar's "Bad Education," said Thursday's Hollywood Reporter.

"Cinema, mon amour," the Tarantino said, yelling into the microphone. "I'd like to say to the audience and the people of France, I love cinema, and it's an honor to be jury president of this magnifique festival. Vive le cinema!"

As president of the jury, Tarantino is responsible for selecting the winner of the Palme D'Or Prize, an award he won 10 yeas ago for "Pulp Fiction."

Organizers were pleased with the opening of the 57th annual film festival despite a low-level protest from part-time striking showbiz workers, which did not interfere with the festivities.
