'Hawaii Five-O' actor, 66, dies

HONOLULU, May 7 (UPI) -- A Hawaiian actor known to a generation of TV fans as "Hawaii Five-0" detective Kono Kalakaua has died of complications from diabetes. He was 66.

Gilbert Francis Lani Damian Kauhi, called Zulu by friends and fans, died Monday at Hawaii's Hilo Medical Center while receiving a dialysis treatment, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported Friday.

During Monday's dialysis, the actor's body stopped working and doctors could not save him, family members said.

Kauhi, who had been on dialysis for six years, was on a waiting list for a second kidney when he died, said his mother, Emma Kauhi.

The actor, who also was a singer, may be best remembered for breaking down a door in the opening segment of "Hawaii Five-0."

"What a shock, what a truly terrible thing," said fellow entertainer Don Ho. "We were beach boys together growing up. Zulu was probably one of the best canoe strokers of all time. He was incredible."
