Report: FCC flooded with Oprah complaints

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 4 (UPI) -- The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has reportedly received more than 1,600 letters complaining about an "Oprah Winfrey Show" segment on teen sex.

The letters said the March 18 broadcast was too racy for TV and demanded Winfrey be cited for indecency, The Smoking Gun reported on its Web site Tuesday.

Most of those who wrote letters were prodded to do so by radio shock jock Howard Stern and ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, The Smoking Gun noted.

The FCC has fined Stern several times for indecency and fans said in their letters to the agency they believe there is a double-standard when it comes to issuing fines.

The Smoking Gun posted a sampling on its Web site, noting that since the commission redacts the names of letter writers, there is no way to confirm their identities.

Despite the complaints, it is unlikely stations broadcasting Winfrey's March show, which originally aired to little notice in October 2003, will be sanctioned, the Web site said.
