Victoria's Secret TV lingerie show axed

NEW YORK, April 12 (UPI) -- Victoria's Secret executives have decided against airing the lingerie retailer's sexy TV special in the wake of government crackdowns on indecency.

The decision to cancel the annual show was made several weeks ago, after Janet Jackson's infamous breast-baring Super Bowl halftime performance aired on CBS, the same network that has aired the Victoria's Secret program for the past two years, Ed Razek, chief marketing officer for Limited, said in Monday's Wall Street Journal.

Limited Brands Inc., owns the Victoria's Secret chain.

"It was a mutual decision" with CBS, Razek said. "We were in the middle of negotiations when it became apparent that to consummate a deal made no sense."

Razek said the Federal Communications Commission's new stringent regulatory guidelines is only part of the decision to cancel the show however.

"We thought that our time and effort and money could be better spent positioning Victoria's Secret as a holiday gift-giving destination," he said.

Limited annually spent nearly $10 million to produce and advertise the special, which featured scantily clad supermodels wearing the company's newest lingerie line.
