Judy Collins honored for her charity work

LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 2 (UPI) -- A Louisville, Ky., mental health advocacy group has honored entertainer Judy Collins with its top award for her many years of charitible work.

Collins is to receive the 2004 Spirit of Peace Award Tuesday from the Caritas Peace Center and the Louisville, Ky., chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, the Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal reported Friday.

The veteran performer also is scheduled to sing several songs and recite poetry during the ceremony.

Collins has spent a great deal of her career trying to increase access to programs for adults and children with mental illness.

Her recent efforts have focused on depression and suicide. Collins lost her only son to suicide, which resulted in her book, "Sanity and Grace."

Collins, who has recorded 37 albums, may be best known for her 1975 version of "Send In the Clowns."

Collins' is only the third recipient of the Spirit of Peace Award. Former first lady Rosalynn Carter and Philip P. Ardery, a founder of the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression and its service facilities known as Wellspring, also have received the honor.
