Dench lends voice to cow in Disney cartoon

LOS ANGELES, April 1 (UPI) -- Dame Judi Dench, known for her performances in high-brow films and plays, let her hair down by lending her voice to an animated cow in "Home on the Range."

"I love cows," the Oscar-winning actress said in production notes for the new animated Disney musical. "So, being asked to play a cow called Mrs. Caloway with a charming hat -- who could resist that? I certainly couldn't. I'm not sure how a British cow got to Patch of Heaven, but I'm frightfully pleased she did. It just made me laugh a great deal. She has a kind of British stiff upper lip thing about her."

Best-known for her performances in the films "Shakespeare in Love," "Iris" and "The Shipping News," Dench has also lent her voice to a mouse in the "Angelina Ballerina" TV series.

She said working on this film was unlike anything she had ever done, however.

"Since most of the recording sessions ... were done without other actors present, it was like doing a one-woman show and then coming to find there's a cast of thousands," she said.
