Gary Oldman joins 'Batman' cast

HOLLYWOOD, March 4 (UPI) -- British actor Gary Oldman has signed on to play a young version of police Commissioner Gordon in the upcoming "Batman" movie.

Best-known for his performances in "Bram Stoker's Dracula," "Hannibal" and "The Scarlet Letter," Oldman joins a cast comprised mostly of actors who hail from the United Kingdom, Empire magazine reported on its Web site Thursday.

Englishman Christian Bale is set to portray the crime-fighting Caped Crusader in "Batman: Intimidation," while Michael Caine will play his butler and Irishman Liam Neeson his mentor.

The movie, the fifth in the "Batman" franchise, is being directed by "Memento" filmmaker Christopher Nolan, who is also British.

The film is currently in production in Iceland and slated for release next year.

Oldman will next be seen in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban."
