Metallica offers concert downloads to fans

NEW YORK, March 2 (UPI) -- Metallica has become the latest U.S. band to provide downloads of concerts via the Internet, it was reported Tuesday.

Beginning with Tuesday's concert in Phoenix, Metallica will give fans the chance to download -- for a fee -- the unedited soundboard recordings from each show of its North American Tour, Billboard.com reported.

"This is the next logical step in a process that began back in 1991 when we first implemented the 'Taper Section' at our shows, where the fans were encouraged to bring in their own gear to record the show ... ," drummer Lars Ulrich told the Web site. "This technology will enable our fans to get the best possible recording of the show, without having to hold a microphone in the air for the entire night."

Approximately four days after the show, audio files will be available for download at LiveMetallica.com for $9.95 for MP3 files and $12.95 for FLAC files.

Nugs.net, which also works with Phish, Pearl Jam and String Cheese Incident, provides the system for the downloads.
