Sex and the City signs off

NEW YORK, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Sunday night's signoff for HBO's "Sex and the City" was not the ratings giant of "M*A*S*H" finale fame, though just as wrenching an event for the faithful.

After 11 seasons, "M*A*S*H" drew a record 125 million viewers for its final episode. The pay channel Home Box Office audience for "Sex," ending after its sixth season, is not nearly as capable of building audience suddenly, even for major events.

The HBO Web site Sunday afternoon concluded an online auction for fashion pieces and accessories worn by the stars of the series, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon.

Farewell parties Sunday night with a "Sex and the City" theme were reported.

The show's appeal to women was at least partially explained by the fact eight of the 10 executive producers, producers and co-producers were women.

Although sexual adventures were a series routine, viewers' allegiance was credited within the producing community to its portrayal of the steady bonds of female friendship through heartbreak and happiness, United Press International said.

Talks were reported still not concluded with the four stars for a big-screen resurrection.
