Monterey Jazz precursor is back

CARMEL, Calif., Feb. 16 (UPI) -- The Jazz at Sunset concept is back in Carmel, where it flourished before producer Jimmy Lyons hatched the Monterey Jazz Festival nearby in 1958.

Lyons started the jazz series at the Sunset Center in the 1950s in the years before his inaugural Monterey Festival.

The Sunset was renovated and re-opened in 2003, and the Monterey Festival decided to give the series new life. The second Jazz at Sunset spring concert series, produced by the Monterey Jazz Festival organizers, will feature pianist Ahmad Jamal, violinist Regina Carter, saxophonist Wayne Shorter and percussionist Poncho Sanchez and their bands.

Jamal's trio opens the season on March 23, Carter's quintet performs on March 31, Shorter's quartet is featured April 15 and Sanchez's nine-piece Latin band concludes the 2004 series on May 7.
