Luther Vandross wins four Grammys

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Luther Vandross, who suffered a debilitating stroke in 2003, won four Grammys in Los Angeles Sunday, including Song of the Year for "Dance with My Father."

The best-selling R&B singer won for best male R&B vocal performance for "Dance with My Father" and best R&B album for the album of the same name. He also shared a Grammy with Beyoncé, for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for "The Closer I Get to You."

That was one of five Grammys for Beyoncé, who also won for Best Contemporary R&B Album for her first solo album, "Dangerously in Love." The singer tied Alicia Keys, Norah Jones and Lauryn Hill for most Grammy wins in one night by a female artist.

Vandross was unable to attend the awards cermony at Staples Center, but he appeared on videotape following a tribute featuring Keys, Celine Dion and Richard Marx -- his co-writer on "Dance with My Father."

"I wish I could be with you there tonight," Vandross said with some difficulty. "I want to thank everyone for your love and support."
