NEW YORK, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- A rewritten version of Stephen Sondheim's 1974 musical adaptation of Aristophanes'"The Frogs" will be staged at Lincoln Center in June.
The Lincoln Center Theater, in its announcement Wednesday, said Sondheim, 74, has added seven songs to the original score, Burt Shevelove's book based on the Greek comedy has been updated by actor Nathan Lane, who also will star in the production at the center's Vivan Beaumont Theater. Lane will play Dionysos and "Saturday Night Live" alumnus Chris Kattan will play his slave.
"Frogs" was first produced at Yale University with Meryl Streep in the chorus. It ran only 40 minutes, but the new version will be a full evening's entertainment.
Sondheim currently is editing the recording of "Bounce," his latest musical which received lukewarm reviews in Chicago and Washington, D.C.
The Roundabout Theater in New York will produce revivals of two of his musicals this year -- "Assassins" next month and "Pacific Overtures" in the fall -- and the New York City Opera is reviving his "Sweeney Todd" during its spring season at Lincoln Center.
