Family fights for president's reputation

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- A delegation from Austin, Texas, of former aides to President Lyndon Johnson and family representatives headed for New York to defend his reputation.

They planned to meet the head of The History Channel, which in November 2003 broadcast a documentary claiming LBJ was among those who had conspired in the assassination of President John Kennedy. "The Guilty Men" was partly based on a book by Barr McClellan.

Former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, and Johnson's widow, Lady Bird, called for an investigation in letters to executives of the History Channel, NBC, Hearst Corp. and the Walt Disney Co., which owns the channel, the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman reports.

Lady Bird Johnson, 91, wrote no accusation made against Johnson "has hurt as painfully."

Following complaints when the program first aired, an introduction was added stating it was one of many theories. Daughter Luci Baines Johnson said the channel would not include a family statement decrying the program's accuracy.
