NEW YORK, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- The actor who played Gollum in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy said director Peter Jackson presented him the ring his character so coveted once filming ended.
"I got (to keep from the set) a number of things, but the most precious thing was both Elijah Wood and myself were given (the rings)," Andy Serkis told UPI's Karen Butler. Serkis provided the voice and physical model for the films' conflicted, power-obsessed ex-Hobbit Gollum.
"Elijah was given the ring from 'Fellowship of the Ring,'" Serkis explained. "There were only like two or three and, rather fittingly and quite poetically, Pete decided to give the other one to Gollum, to me, so Gollum and Frodo both get to keep original rings."
Throughout "The Lord of the Rings" films, Gollum (Serkis) and Frodo (Wood) struggle for possession of the all-powerful band.
The final installment of the trilogy, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," won four Golden Globe Awards Sunday, including best dramatic picture and best director for Jackson.
