'Tanner 88' rejoins 2004 politics

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- "Tanner 88," the HBO fictional series chronicling the 1988 presidential race is being updated for 2004 politics, according to Thursday's Daily Variety.

Creators Robert Altman and "Doonesbury" cartoonist Garry Trudeau will shoot two-minute segments in which Tanner reminisces about his White House run and comments on the current Democratic candidates. The new series will air on the Sundance Channel beginning Feb. 3.

Michael Murphy, reprises his role as Jack Tanner, a fictional Democratic hopeful the 1988 presidential race. Pamela Reed, who played his campaign manager, and Cynthia Nixon, the "Sex and the City" actress who played his 17-year-old daughter return.

The next generation of "Tanner" was conceived by Sundance executives who saw parallels between current and past races.

"Then, as now, there was a huge slate of Democrats vying for their party's nomination," said Paola Freccero, Sundance Channel's senior vice president of film programming. "Then, as now, the democrats were attempting to defeat a Bush in the White House."
