Singer to open golden year in Big Apple

NEW YORK, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Singer Carol Sloane will kick off her 50th anniversary in jazz at the Village Vanguard, Jan. 13-18.

As she visits the world's most famous basement jazz club, Sloane will perform songs from "Whisper Sweet," on High Note Records. It is her 48th recording since her 1959 recording debuted with the Larry Elgart Band in 1959.

Her career has included performing with Lambert, Hendricks and Ross at the Village Vanguard and the Newport Jazz Festival, and regular appearances on the "Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson.

Among many other career distinctions, Sloane turned up in three Spenser mystery novels by best-selling author Robert Parker ("Ceremony," "Hush Money" and "Potshot").

In liner notes for her CD, "I Never Went Away," Parker wrote he considered Sloane "the best singer since Sarah (Vaughan) and one of three or four best that ever did this."
