Moore was seen storming out of the backstage door Wednesday, the New York Times said, reportedly after getting a brusque letter from Simon upbraiding her for not knowing her lines. She played the title role of a novelist in the play, scheduled for a Dec. 18 opening.
"Mary was devastated and completely debilitated personally and professionally," said her publicist, Mara Buxbaum, in a prepared statement. "Mary has been working tirelessly for months but feels pushed out of this production."
She was replaced temporarily by her understudy, Patricia Hodges.
