Clapton, Prince star on Hendrix tribute

NASHVILLE, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Jimi Hendrix's half-sister is gathering some of rock's most recognizable star power for a musical tribute to the deceased American music icon.

Janie Hendrix, president and chief executive officer of the family company Experience Hendrix, has announced that the project, titled "Power of Soul," will feature a previously unreleased Stevie Ray Vaughan medley, as well as newly recorded covers by Eric Clapton, Prince, George Clinton and Bootsy Collins, Musiq, Sting, Santana, Earth, Wind & Fire, Chaka Kahn and others.

The tribute will differ from previous ones because it will have more of a soul and R&B feel, Janie Hendrix said in an interview at billboard.com. She added that this is a project she's envisioned all of her life.

"He was in chitlin-circuit bands and playing with Diana Ross, the Isley Brothers, Little Richard, all of them," she said. "So, I'm just trying to shed that light too."

"Power of Soul," due out May 4, will benefit the United Negro College Fund.
