Drum master in Kwanzaa tribute

NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Master drummer Juma Santos is holding drumming seminars in New Orleans and will play during the New Orleans Public Schools' 10th annual Kwanzaa Extravaganza.

Santos will lead the drumming for the Kwanzaa Extravaganza Friday, Dec. 5 at 10am at Southern University Auditorium. The event will also feature Dr. Malana Karenga, the creator of Kwanzaa.

Other events in Santos' schedule include the "Rhythms of Congo Square" drum workshop Wednesday at Southern University, a "Healing Drum Circle" at the Ashe Cultural Arts Center Saturday, and a "Drumming for Life" workshop at Congo Square in Louis Armstrong Park Sunday from 2-5pm.

Santos has performed on more than 75 recordings, including Miles Davis' groundbreaking "Bitches Brew" album. He has toured and recorded with Nina Simone, Babatunde Olatunji, Tito Puente, Taj Mahal, Roy Ayers, David Sanborn and the Four Tops, among others.
