Bolshoi must rehire fired ballerina

MOSCOW, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A Moscow court has ordered the Bolshoi ballet company to rehire a glamorous ballerina it fired for being too heavy, the New York Times said Thursday.

The court also awarded Anastasia Volochkova $6,500 in back pay and damages since her firing Sept. 16.

The Bolshoi fired Volochkova after she turned down a new contract. Bolshoi officials accused her of being unwieldy onstage, both too tall and too heavy for male soloists, who, they said, refused to dance with her. Volochkova has said that she weighs 109 pounds.

She was measured at 5 feet 6 inches tall by The New York Times, but she refused to be weighed.

The Bolshoi had no comment. Its lawyer, Dmitry Lobachyov, said it might appeal the decision. "We regard it as unjust," he said.

Despite the ruling, Volochkova said she was not hopeful of a fast return to the Bolshoi stage.
