Plans revived for Dracula theme park

BUCHAREST, Romania, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Romania's plans for a Dracula theme park reportedly have been revived at a farm formerly owned by executed dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.

The Romanian government initially wanted to build the park at the Transylvanian birthplace of Vlad Tepes, "Vlad the Impaler," thought to have been the inspiration for Bram Stoker's fictional vampire.

The medieval town of Sighisoara was an ideal setting, but protesters argued construction would damage what is designated a world heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Now, the government has authorized construction of the park at the town of Snagov, 25 miles north of Bucharest, where Tepes is thought to have been buried, the London Telegraph said.

Work worth $85 million will begin in March and be complete by the end of next year, tourism officials said.

The 1,500-acre state-owned farm at Snagov was once the pride of Ceausescu, who was deposed and shot 14 years ago.
