Cleveland fest marking silver with Silver

CLEVELAND, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Greater Cleveland's Tri-C Jazz Festival will honor bop pianist Horace Silver and native son Tommy LiPuma at its 25th anniversary run next April.

The festival celebrates its silver anniversary with an April 16 concert honoring hard-bop pioneer Silver, featuring Al Jarreau, David Sanborn and Joe Sample, and a concert the following night in honor of LiPum a and headlined by George Benson, Diana Krall and Dr. John. Both gala events will be at the Allen Theatre on Playhouse Square.

Grammy-winning record producer LiPuma, 67, is the chairman of the Verve Music Group. He has been a career champion for Silver, Benson, Krall, Dr. John, Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis and Natalie Cole.

The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and the trio of pianist Geoff Keezer, drummer Lewis Nash and bassist Christian McBride will accompany the headliners each night. Gala concert proceeds will benefit the festival's endowment fund.

Paintings from LiPuma's 20th-century American art collection will be shown at the Cleveland Museum of Art from March 28 through July 31.
