Smothers Bros. to make TV return

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Tom and Dick Smothers will play themselves in a 2-hour television comedy "mockumentary" about their careers, Daily Variety reported Tuesday.

The project is being run by Paul Reiser's Nuance Productions, with Roger Director ("Moonlighting") writing the untitled project, the newspaper said.

So far, comedian David Steinberg, an alumnus of the "Smother Brothers Comedy Hour," is slated to direct.

The project will be a movie-within-a-movie featuring the Smothers Brothers acting as advisers to the producers of a fictional Smothers Brothers biography. Actors will play younger versions of the brothers.

CBS pulled the plug on the Smothers Brothers' show in part due to Steinberg's satirical sermons, which some believed mocked organized religion.
