Favorite Female Soul/R&B honors went to Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash in August 2001 at the age of 22.

For the most part, however, veterans led the way in the 31st annual awards ceremony.

Alabama, Fleetwood Mac, Luther Vandross and The Isley Brothers all beat out younger competitors for the awards based on record sales and listener surveys.

Faith Hill and McGraw kept it all in the family, taking home the awards for favorite female and male country artists.

The awards hosted by Jimmy Kimmel were broadcast live on ABC from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Calif.
