Palestinians agree on new government

RAMALLAH, West Bank, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement reportedly reached agreement on a new Palestinian government late Friday, sources reported.

A close associate of Arafat's, Hakam Balaawi, will be appointed to the key interior minister post, sources told the BBC.

However, even if Balaawi is confirmed, the sources said his responsibilities would be limited to civil issues, the BBC said.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei reportedly gave up trying to persuade Arafat to accept his candidate for the interior position, General Nasser Yussuf, the BBC said.

Fatah sources reportedly indicated Yussuf could be named deputy prime minister in the new cabinet.

More meetings will take place over the weekend before any official decision is announced, the BBC said. A parliamentary vote on the new appointments is expected to happen by Sunday.
