Alan Alda recovers from surgery in Chile

LA SERENA, Chile, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Actor Alan Alda, filming a TV documentary in Chile, is recovering in a hospital from emergency surgery for a intestinal blockage, the BBC reported.

The 67-year-old actor is recovering at the San Juan de Dios Hospital in La Serena, about 300 miles north of the Chilean capital of Santiago.

Alda, the host of PBS's "Scientific American Frontiers," had been working on an astronomy documentary that included filming a telescope in the Andes.

He was admitted to the hospital on Monday and is expecting his wife to arrive.

While Adla starred in several feature films, he is best known for his Emmy Award-winning role as Capt. Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce, the U.S. Army doctor in television series "M*A*S*H" that ran for 11 years in the 1970s and 1980s.
