Paris 'White Night' draws 1 million

PARIS, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Bertrand Delanoe, the mayor of Paris who wants to turn the French capital into a playground, was not disappointed after this year's all-night arts festival.

Some 1 million residents packed the streets Saturday for Nuit Blance, or White Night, when all the city's art attractions are thrown open to the public, the BBC reported.

This is the second year of the festival. Last year's inaugural was marred by a knife attack on Delanoe by a mentally disturbed man.

But the event has proved such a hit that it is being copied in capitals like Brussels and Rome.

This year's festival-goers were able to choose from a wide range of activities from soaking up culture at the Louvre to having a dipsoak in one of the city's public swimming pools, BBC reported.

Delanoe, who spent six weeks recovering from his stab wounds, says he is determined to make city life more palatable for residents and tourists alike.
