Time traveler Dr. Who returning to TV

LONDON, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- After a 14-year break and a steady fan campaign, time traveler Doctor Who is returning to BBC television to once again do battle with the daleks.

But in a move that will surprise devotees of the show, The London Guardian said, the new series is being written by Russell T Davies, creator of controversial drama "Queer as Folk." Davies is writing a six-part series tentatively aimed at 2005.

"I grew up watching Doctor Who, hiding behind the sofa like so many others. He's had a good rest and now it's time to bring him back," Davies said. "The new series will be fun, exciting, contemporary and scary."

Famous for its theme music, wonky sets, convoluted plots and legendary baddies such as the daleks and the cybermen, the series originally ran on the BBC from 1963 to 1989. Alan Davies is an early favorite to land the title role.
