Brubeck to receive 'Living Legend' award

WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Pianist Dave Brubeck will receive the Library of Congress's "Living Legend" award on Sept. 30 when his quartet opens the library's 2003-04 concert series.

The annual award honors people who have helped to enrich American culture. At 82, Brubeck remains an active performer and composer.

Brubeck's 1960 hit with alto saxophonist Paul Desmond's "Take Five" was the first jazz recording to sell more than 1 million copies. He has been honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award and inducted into the International Jazz Hall of Fame.

The library's concert series also features the Gonzalo Rubalcaba trio on Oct. 17, the Chano Dominguez sextet on Nov. 8, Jimmy Scott on March 10, Meredith D'Ambrosio on March 31, Shirley Horn on May 8 and the Dave Holland quintet on May 14.
