Emmy Awards to honor John Ritter

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Producer Don Mischer said he's "still grappling with how to pay tribute" to John Ritter at the Emmy Awards show in Los Angeles Sunday night.

Ritter, who died last week of a torn aorta, was scheduled to be a presenter at television's tribute to itself telecast live Sunday on Fox at 8-11 p.m. ET.

The awards show will do a special tribute to Ritter, the 54-year-old star of ABC-TV's situation comedy "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" who was best known for his role as Jack Tripper on the 1970s hit "Three's Company."

Mischer said Ritter was held in such high esteem and his death Sept. 11 was such a shock that few will not be thinking of him during the awards program, the New York Post reported.

Ritter's tribute will begin a segment honoring stars who died in the past year, including Bob Hope, Katharine Hepburn and "Mister Rogers" Fred Rogers, the Post said.
