NEW YORK, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and pianist Makoto Ozone Friday will be awarded honorary doctorates at the Berklee College of Music.
Each will be recognized for outstanding contributions to contemporary music and will help welcome the class of 2007's 1,150 students from more than 75 countries. Carrington and Ozone graduated from Berklee in 1983.
Medford, Mass., native Carrington was awarded a full scholarship at age 11 by Berklee founder Lawrence Berk. At 17, she recorded her debut album, "TLC and Friends." She has played with Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, James Moody, Lester Bowie, David Sanborn, Herbie Hancock and Cassandra Wilson and was house drummer for "The Arsenio Hall Show."
Ozone's career has thrived both in America and his native Japan. He has released 13 albums as a leader and played on a host of others. In 1983, he graduated from Berklee, made a world tour with vibist Gary Burton, gave a solo piano concert at New York's Carnegie Recital Hall and signed a record contract with Columbia Records.
