The Franken solicitation was written on letterhead from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, TheSmokingGun reported. It exhorted Ashcroft to "share a moment when you were tempted to have sex, but were able to overcome your urges through willpower and strength of character. Be funny!" and also asked whether a young woman ever thought Ashcroft was homosexual because he rejected her overtures.
The letter said the material would be used in a book to be titled "Savin' It" and claimed Franken already had received responses from Condoleezza Rice and Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Penn.
Franken was sued earlier this month by Fox News Channel in a bid to prevent publication of his coming book, "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right," set for release this week. Fox claims the use of "fair and balanced" infringes on its trademark.
