Springer decides against Senate bid

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- Schlock TV host Jerry Springer announced Wednesday he will not run for the U.S. Senate in Ohio.

Springer, a former Cincinnati mayor, said he's afraid the "negative backdrop of his television show" would take the focus away from real issues.

"I now realize that for me to be a successful candidate, there must be separation from the show," Springer said.

Springer said the decision not to run was "agonizing" and had not been finalized until Wednesday morning.

Springer filed nominating petitions in mid-July, saying he thought his candidacy would energize the youth vote. The prospect, however, produced little enthusiasm among the Democratic establishment.
