Kidman drops out of 'Manderlay'

HOLLYWOOD, July 23 (UPI) -- Nicole Kidman has dropped out of Lars von Trier's "Manderlay," the second movie in the planned "U.S.A." trilogy following "Dogville."

Her exit was caused by a scheduling conflict, according to Von Trier's producer Vibeke Windelov.

"Manderlay" is on a tight timetable to finish shooting by July 2004 but Kidman is not available until the following fall, Daily Variety reported Wednesday.

"We simply couldn't make it work," said Windelov.

"Manderlay" could not be pushed back because some of the financing is contingent on the picture completing principal photography by July 1 of next year.

The role of Grace in the "U.S.A" trilogy will be played by three different actresses across the three movies.

Windelov admitted she currently has "no idea" who will replace Kidman.

"Dogville," with its experimental use of a virtually bare soundstage and its stridently anti-American message, got a mixed response in Cannes, Variety said.
