CLEVELAND, June 12 (UPI) -- Jerry Springer, the controversial talk show host, is opening a Web site to help push a possible bid for the U.S. Senate in Ohio.
Springer, a Democrat and former Cincinnati mayor, hasn't decided yet but plans to begin raising money through the hawking of T-shirts, CDs and autographed photos on his site, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reported. T-shirts, for example, go for $25 and come emblazoned with "Yokels for Jerry," referring to the underclass he says is left out of the political process.
If Springer decides to chase the seat now held by Republican George Voinovich, he will transfer the money into a campaign fund, according to Mike Ford, a consultant who handled earlier Springer campaigns.
Ohio state Sen. Eric Fingerhut, the only announced candidate in the race, said he believes what Springer is doing is technically legal but smacks of political shenanigans.
