TEHRAN, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Officials with the State Oil Co. of Azerbaijan hinted Iran may be a potential export host to compensate for regional disruptions in the Caucasus.
Conflict between Russia and Georgia disrupted the flow of more than 1 percent of the world's oil through several pipelines from Azerbaijan.
The Iranian Press TV Thursday, quoting a report by International Oil Daily, said SOCAR may examine possible export routes through the Islamic Republic as a method of diversification.
SOCAR officials noted they had approached several other regional contractors, including Dubai's Middle East Petrol, the oil transport company.
Officials cautioned, however, any exports through Iran would depend on the status of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, adding if BTC were secured, Iran would not carry Azeri exports.
